Easy Personalized Bachelorette Water Bottles  (Tutorial)

Materials:

Permanent Vinyl ( I used this Rose Gold Vinyl)*

Cricut

Light Grip Mat

Weeding Tool

Water Bottle** (I chose clear for my project)

transfer tape

Notes:

*This vinyl comes with a protective clear sheet. Remove this before you place the vinyl on the circuit mat.

**This tutorial works with water bottles and tumblers. If you’re using a different bottle than the one I used, you can use a measuring tape to figure out your decal size.

Instructions

There are 4 steps to making your personalized bachelorette water bottles.

  1. Create your text/cut file in Cricut Design Space.
  2. Cut your vinyl decal with Cricut
  3. Apply transfer tape to your decal
  4. Apply decal to your water bottle.

Here are detailed instructions for each step.

How to Make Vinyl Decals with Cricut

For my bottles, I decided to use Metallic Rose Gold Vinyl. I absolutely love how shiny and glossy this vinyl is, and it comes out so pretty and elegant. It’s gorgeous, and I can’t stop looking at it!

To make your personalized bachelorette bottles, you’ll start by making your decal with your Cricut.

Choosing a Decal Size

There are two ways to make decals:

  1. Use the same width for your size.
  2. Use the same font.

When you use the same width, longer names will appear smaller and shorter names will be bigger. With this option, decals will have different heights.

With option #2, your decals will be cohesive. For my project, I decided to go with option 2 because I am placing my decals vertically and wanted the same height for them.

Instructions

  1. Open up  Cricut Design Space.  Choose a new project.Cricut Design Space New Project Screen
  2. Select Text from the panel on the left. how to add text in cricut design space
  3. Type your desired name into the text box. For this example, we are using “Vanessa. “Typing Name into Text box in Cricut Design Space
  4. Change your font to 72 pt and Christmas Farmhouse.
    1. Christmas Farmhouse is a licensed font. I got mine from Creative Fabrica membership. Creative Fabrica is a wonderful website to get fonts. If you don’t want to pay for the membership, you can look for a font that is available for personal use or use a font that is already in your system. Cricut Design Space Text
  5. Highlight and Ungroup your text (This will let you move each letter around). Ungrouping text in Cricut Design Space
  6. Move the letters to attach them so that the name is cohesive. You can skip this step if you are okay with the spaces between the letters. I wanted my writing to be script. text in cricut design space
  7. Select your text and weld (bottom right-hand corner). This puts your text back together as one piece. weld text in cricut design space
  8. Change the color to match the vinyl color. For this project, I chose a rose gold color. change color in cricut design space
  9. Select Make it from the upper left-hand corner. make it in cricut design space
  10. Change the size to match your vinyl. I used 12 x 12. Once the proper size is selected, hit continue from the bottom left corner. change material size in cricut design space
  11. Change the dial on your Cricut to Vinyl.
  12. Remove clear protective covering from your vinyl—place vinyl on a light grip mat.
  13. Load your light grip mat into the Cricut by aligning your mat and hitting the arrow button.
  14. Select Make It on your Computer and the flashing C on your Cricut.
  15. At this point, your Cricut will cut the name. When finished, unload by hitting the arrow button.

How to Weed Your Vinyl Decal

Using your weeder, carefully lift the edges of the vinyl up. Use the weeder to help peel away the excess material.

How to Transfer Your Decals

Now that you have your decal weeded, you’ll prep it for transfer to the water bottles. Cut the same size transfer tape as your decal. Carefully remove the carrier paper backing from the clear transfer tape. Take the transfer tape and place it directly on top of your decal. You can now move onto applying your personalized decal to the water bottle.

  2. Using a squeegee/scraper or credit card, press firmly on the back of the decal to ensure that the decal sticks to the application transfer paper (clear tape).
  3. Peel the paper backing away from the decal very slowly. If the decal is still on the carrier paper, use the credit card again to firmly rub until the decal lifts on to transfer the paper completely. Go slow and press firmly from all directions.
  4. Apply decal to cleaned and dry area, pressing firmly using squeegee or credit card to adhere decal to application surface. Be sure to go slowly to avoid any bubbles. It’s best to start pressing from the center outward.

Easy Textured Crochet Dish Scrubbies Pattern (Reusable)

Easy textured crochet dish scrubbies pattern

I love switching home products to reusable ones.  This easy textured crochet dish scrubbies pattern is a perfect way to create something functional and pretty. It’s also very beginner-friendly!

I created this pattern after falling in love with Red Heart’s scrubby yarn.  I’d seen it in Michael’s before but never used it. This week I decided to buy some and boy was it a pleasant surprise! I love the yarn texture.  It’s perfect for making crochet dish scrubbies.

Red heart scrubby yarn Marble

The yarn is soft yet textured.  It does a great job with cleaning dishes and it lathers up so well! After making 1 reusable sponge for my mom,  she and my aunt requested 5 more. After that my sister-in-law wanted 12! Needless to say, these are a big hit in my family!

This textured crochet dish scrubbies pattern works in the round and uses one stitch: half double crochet (hdc). It’s very beginner-friendly and works up fast.  I can make one within 10-15 minutes.

You’re welcome to sell any products you create using this pattern. I always appreciate design credit.  You are not allowed to sell this pattern as your own.

Let’s make some crochet dish scrubbies!

Black and white textured crochet dish scrubbies

Why Should You Use Reusable Dish Scrubbies Instead of Disposable Sponges?

1.) It’s Environmentally Friendly

As humans,  we create an unimaginable amount of waste every day.  Much of this waste is not biodegradable, meaning it won’t break down. Rather it piles up in our landfills, polluting our beautiful planet.

Disposable sponges add to this waste problem as we constantly need to buy more to handle our weekly dish load.  Reusable sponges and scrubbies last longer, eliminating the amount of waste created.

Reusable Crochet Dish Scrubbies

2.) It’s More Hygienic than Sponges

Since these scrubbies are reusable and easy to make enough for a week’s worth of use, you’ll be able to stop spreading bacteria onto your dishes. Simply throw your dish scrubbies in with your kitchen laundry items and reuse them as needed.  I like to use one per day and wash them all at the end of the week.

This is way easier than cleaning sponges that tend to go unwashed on sink counters and become bacteria breeding grounds.

3.) It’s Cost-Effective

DIY reusable sponges are cheap to make! One skein of dish scrubby yarn costs about $4.50-5.00 and makes between 5 and 6 scrubbies. With proper care these scrubbies will last much longer than your disposable sponges, saving you money in the long run.

We all love to save money!

Why Crochet Dish Scrubbies Yourself?

Because it’s fun and easy! Crocheting is such a great hobby that can be done anywhere.

If you’re a novice or advanced crocheter, you’ll enjoy this pattern. Plus it’s so satisfying to use something you’ve made yourself.  You’re more likely to incorporate it into your routine. And, you get to decide exactly what colors you want so you can customize the scrubbies to your home decor.

Supplies

1 skein dish scrubby yarn (I used the color Marble)

Stitches

Half Double Crochet (hdc)

Yarn over,  insert hook into stitch, yarn over, and pull through 1 loop. You will have 3 loops remaining on hook.  Yarn over and pull through all loops.

Pattern Notes

  • This yarn is textured and it might be hard to see your stitches depending on the color you choose. I kept my stitches loose which helped.
  • Chain 1 at the beginning of round 1-4 does not count as a stitch. When using a stitch marker,  add to your first stitch, not chain 1.

How to Single Crochet for Beginners | Basic SC Stitch Tutorial

how to single crochet tutorial

Are you a beginner crocheter? You’ve probably come across basic stitches and wondered how to single crochet

The single crochet stitch (sc) is one of the easiest stitches to learn and it’s a great one to learn for beginners. This stitch is one of my favorites. Once you master this stitch, you will have a foundation to start working on crochet projects such as a simple scarf.

In this free beginner-friendly crochet tutorial, you’ll learn exactly how to do the single crochet stitch with a step-by-step guide along with helpful pictures and videos to get you started!

How to Single Crochet for Beginners:

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s get our supplies together.

  • Yarn (I’m using 100% acrylic yarn in medium weight 4)*
  • Crochet hook (I’m using I9)

*When you are a beginner, you want to use medium-weight yarn as this is easier to work with.  Match the crochet hook size to the yarn you use. This information will be available on the label.

Single Crochet (sc) Stitch:

The single crochet stitch is done by inserting your hook into the stitch

how to single crochet with photos

Then you will yarn over. Now you will have three loops on your hook.

how to single crochet step by step guide

Pull through the stitch and you will have two loops on your hook.

how to single crochet

Yarn over and pull through both loops.

single crochet tutorial

Here is how you do a Single Crochet Stitch from Start to Finish

Tie a slip knot onto your crochet hook.

Foundation: Chain 10

Row 1: Single crochet (sc) in second from hook. sc to the end. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2: Skip first stitch and single crochet to the end. (9 stitches)*

Repeat as many times as you would like to practice.

*There are two ways of starting a new row. Sometimes crocheters will count the chain one at the start of a row as a stitch. In this case, you will start your single crochet in the second stitch. If a pattern says that chain one does not count as a stitch, then single crochet into the first stitch.

However you choose to do it, make sure your stitch count is correct to ensure straight edges as you proceed from row to row.

Are you a visual learner? Here is a video tutorial for the single crochet.

And if you’re looking for a full tutorial with how to make a slip knot, foundation chain, and single crochet stitch, check this video out.

Great job! Now you have mastered the single crochet stitch. If you continue adding rows, you will end up with a nice thin scarf in no time!

You can apply your single crochet skills in this beginner-friendly crochet dishcloth pattern.

How to Make Personalized Vinyl Decals with Cricut

Have you seen those cute personalized vinyl decals and thought, “Hey, I want to try to make this at home?”

Personalizing items is so much fun! It’s probably one of my favorite DIY Cricut projects. In this free tutorial, you’ll learn how to make personalized vinyl decals with Cricut that you can use to decorate any item you want!

Why should you make personalized vinyl decals?

You can use these name decals to personalize coffee mugs, wine glasses, and much more! They are great for jazzing up drinkware in your home. This past new year’s I made my own 2021 champagne flutes and didn’t have to buy them!

They’re also great for bachelorette and wedding DIY projects. Creating custom gifts is so easy.

Personally, I also sell these on my Etsy store and I have sold many of these worldwide.

How to Make Personalized Vinyl Decals With Cricut

Supplies List:

Vinyl

There are many types of vinyl out there and what you use will change based on your project. I use Oracle 651 for my permanent vinyl projects and Oracle 631 for temporary vinyl. These types of vinyl work with hard surfaces such as glass.

Oracle 651 brand is great to work with and it can be used outside as well. For this tutorial, I used Oracle 651 in gold

Note: Oracle 651 is not an iron-on vinyl. This won’t work with T-shirts and fabric.

Transfer Tape

Transfer tape is used to remove your personalized vinyl decal from its carrier paper to help you transfer it to your project surface.

Cricut

Cricut Mat

Weeder

A weeder is used to help you remove the excess bits from the carrier paper.

Notes:

When you first start out with creating your personalized vinyl decals in Cricut, you want to stick to clear legible fonts and larger sizes. As you get more comfortable, you can move to a cursive font. This is because smaller fonts and scripts are delicate and harder to weed. It requires more expertise and patience.

Instructions:

Open a new project in Design Space:

Click the text box from the left-hand panel:

how to add text in cricut design space

Write your desired name. For this tutorial, I’m using my name (Bindi).

how to make personalized vinyl decals in cricut design space

Change font in the top panel. For beginners, first, start with an easy thick font.  Once you get comfortable with the process, you can experiment with other fonts. I chose Arial and Bold for style.

how to change font in circut design space

Next, we will change our size. 3 inches width is the smallest size you should go with as a beginner. Note that if your name is long, it will appear smaller as it will have less height than a shorter name. Here are some examples of how names change based on character length. It’s important to take this into account when you are determining the width size.

how to change text width in cricut design space

Here is the name Alexandra with a width of 3 inches. You can see it’s a much smaller font to make it fit.

cricut design space, longer character names have shorter height compared to shorter character names

Once you have your text the size and font you want,  set the color to match your vinyl.  I changed mine to gold.

how to change color in cricut design space

Select Make it in the right corner.

how to make personalized vinyl decals with cricut

On the next page choose the size of your vinyl.  Mine is 12 x 12. Move to next page.

how to make personalized vinyl decals in cricut design space

Change the dial on your Cricut to Vinyl.

Load your mat and hit the flashing C to cut your project.

Once Cricut finishes. Cut the name from the sheet of vinyl and start weeding.

How to Weed a Vinyl Decal:

Using your weeder, carefully lift the edges of the vinyl up. Use the weeder to help peel away the excess material.

Troubleshooting

Sometimes, you may see some cutting problems with Cricut depending on the type of vinyl you use.

I have had issues with Paper Studio and Glitter vinyl not cutting through because they are thicker.  In these instances, you will need to experiment.

You can increase the cut pressure by selecting custom on your dial and browse materials.

how to change material settings in cricut

Play around with the settings and add multi-cut if needed.

how to change material settings in cricut

I’ve also found success with the Iron-On setting.

When you are ready to apply to a surface, apply transfer tape to the decal.

Vinyl Application Instructions:

  1. Clean the application surface area with alcohol or soap & water. Dry thoroughly.
  2. Using a squeegee or credit card, press firmly on the back of decal to ensure that the decal sticks to the application transfer paper (clear tape).
  3. Peel the paper backing away from the decal very slowly. If the decal is still on the carrier paper, using credit card again to firmly rub until decal lifts on to transfer paper completely. Go slow and press firmly from all directions.
  4. Apply decal to cleaned and dry area, pressing firmly using squeegee or credit card to adhere decal to application surface. Be sure to go slowly to avoid any bubbles. It’s best to start pressing from the center outward.

Vinyl Decal Aftercare and How to Seal Your Vinyl Decal:

Please note that your item after the vinyl application is NOT microwave or dishwasher safe. You can handwash your items for maximum longevity.

If you would like your vinyl decal surfaces to be microwave and dishwasher safe, there are some things you can do to seal the vinyl.

  • Epoxy Resin:
    • This is one of the more popular methods to seal vinyl. Vinyl stays put and resin keeps the decal’s vibrant colors.
    • The downside is that epoxy resin is toxic and very tough to handle. Using this method requires a lot of preparation and time. Follow proper instructions and make sure to use gloves and a ventilating respirator mask to avoid breathing fumes.
    • This tutorial is a great resource if you’re looking to use this method.
  • Mod Podge:
    • Mod Podge is dishwasher and microwave safe is used to paint over your decal surface.
    • This sealant is water-based so it is non-toxic.
  • Spray Sealant:
    • A spray sealant helps with building an even coating on your surface. You’ll need a liquid polyurethane spray.
    • Use in a well-ventilated area and wear proper masks.
    • This is a good sealant spray.
  • Crystalac Brite Tone
    • This is a great epoxy alternative as it’s non-toxic.
    • It goes on in thin layers so it can take time to build-up to the thickness you like.

Hope you enjoyed this step-by-step guide to make personalized vinyl decals with Cricut. How did your decals turn out? Comment below or tag your photos on Instagram – @By.Bindi. I would love to see your creations.

A Beginner’s Guide to Crocheting: How to Make a Slip Knot

Crocheting for Beginner's, How to Make a Slip Knot

Did you start crocheting recently? Have you come across a slip knot in a crochet pattern? If so, you might be wondering how to make a slip knot. In this beginner’s crochet tutorial with easy-to-follow pictures, you’ll learn everything you need to start your project.

If you’re someone who needs a visual, there’s also a video to follow along with as well!

A slip knot is a fundamental element when starting any crochet project and it’s very easy to master for beginners.

What is a Slip Knot?

A slip knot is used to create the first chain of your project.

When my mom taught me to crochet almost 20 years ago, she did not teach me the slip knot. I would just tie a loop and cast it on the hook.  Needless to say, this left my early projects looking pretty uneven.

You live and learn, right?

Why use a Slip Knot in Your Crochet Projects?

Slip knots make it easy to adjust the knot to the hook.  You call pull and tighten without the worry of the knot tightening completely. This helps keep your starting chains even.

A slip knot also sets a good rhythm for your crochet project. The first building block that will lead to a great finished piece!

Yarn

Notes:

For this tutorial, I used an I9 crochet hook and medium worsted acrylic yarn.  When you are a beginner crocheter, it’s easier to work with yarn that is cheaper and a little thicker. It’s more forgiving.

If you don’t have a crochet kit, this is the one I use.  It has many hooks in various sizes and comes with a cute pouch. I love it because it has everything I need ready to go and keeps me organized.

Instructions:

Leave 6-8 inches of yarn tail and make a loop around your finger with the yarn.

How to Make a slip knot pretzel method

Take your yarn tail and throw it across the loop on your finger.

how to make a crochet slip knot for beginners

From behind, bring the yarn tail to the right side. You will form a pretzel.

Insert crochet hook through the yarn in the middle of the pretzel and pull up.

Tighten as needed.

Congratulations! You’ve completed a crochet slip knot.

I hope you found this beginner’s guide to crocheting helpful. Now that you know how to make a slip knot,  you’re on your way to making all the crochet pieces!

how to make hearts confetti with cricut

3.) Resize your heart to your liking.  For my project, I used a variation of .5 in as I wanted small hearts.

4.) Once your heart is sized, duplicate however many times you like.

5.) Change the fill color to match your cardstock. I changed mine to a rose gold color.

6.) Select make it in the upper right corner and proceed to the next screen.

7.) Set the dial on the Cricut to cardstock.

8.) On your screen, change the paper size to 8.5 x 11 and proceed to the next screen after clicking continue.

10.) Align cardstock on your mat and load it into Cricut.  Make sure edges are properly aligned. I used the Recollections brand from Michael’s in Rose Gold Foil. This cardstock is 65 lbs and has a lovely sheen that changes colors depending on how the light hits it. It does have a brown back. You can get it on Amazon here

Feel free to use any color you like!

11.) Hit the flashing button on your Cricut. Once the Cricut has loaded the mat, hit the C.

12.) After the machine cuts your project, lift cardstock up.  Your confetti will be on the mat. Use a scraper to lift from the mat. My scraper is the Cricut brand and it works really well in getting the confetti off!

And, now the fun part!

How to Make Reusable Crochet Face Scrubbies in 10 Minutes

How to Make Reusable Crochet Face Scrubbies in 10 minutes (Beginner Friendly Crochet Pattern)

Reusable face scrubbies are a big trend these days. It makes sense to ditch disposable face wipes and cotton rounds that plug up our landfills and switch to the more economical eco-friendly makeup remover. Just look on Etsy, and you’ll see tons of options for homemade scrubbies. They’re much cheaper, last longer, and are easy to maintain with laundry or handwash.

Over the past couple of years, I started to ditch commercial one-use products for more economical reusable ones. They’re better for the environment and your body. Recently, my obsession is face scrubbies. I love these things and have made loads of them. They exfoliate my skin so well and leaves it super soft. I noticed with patterns I came across that the scrubby tends to get too “holey” when it’s dampened in water. This makes it a little hard to wash your face when the stitches don’t hold up against face wash and water. Due to this, I experimented with making a pattern with two yarn strands and was pleasantly surprised by how sturdy and still soft they were!

If you’re like me and love DIY projects, you’ll enjoy these crochet face scrubbies. They work up very fast. I can have one done in less than 10 minutes. And, they’re super cheap, costing around 50 cents for one. These scrubbies are also sturdier due to the two yarn design, plus it gives the scrubbies a cool two-tone look! This crochet pattern is beginner-friendly. The only stitch you’ll need to know is half double-crochet.

If you’re super brand new to crocheting, I would recommend a crochet kit. The one I have comes with a good range of hook sizes, stitch markers, and weaving needles. And, it comes in a handy bag so you won’t lose anything!

You are welcome to sell any creations you make using this project. I would appreciate credit if you do so. Since these work up fast, they’d be great for craft fairs, bath spa gifts, and to sell online. You are not allowed to sell this crochet pattern as your own.

Let’s get started!

Reusable Crochet Face Scrubbies Pattern

Materials:

  • 2 skeins medium weight (4) 100% cotton yarn (I used I Love This Cotton yarn in White and Rosey)*
  • I-9 hook
  • Stitch marker
  • Needle to weave ends

*Feel free to experiment with different colors. You can also make the pattern in one color; just use 2 skeins of the same color.

Size:

The approximate finished diameter will be 3 inches.

Stitches:

  • Half Double Crochet (HDC): Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, and pull through loop. Yarn over and pull through all loops.
  • Slip Stich (sl st): Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, and pull through a loop.

Notes:

  • Chain 1 at the start of rows does not count as a stitch.
  • Always slip stitch into the first stitch of the row, not chain 1.
  • Working with two strands of yarn can be a little difficult if it is your first time doing so. Make sure to keep your tension loose so you can easily insert hook into stitches. Keep skeins separate to keep yarn from getting tangled as you work. Always make sure you have both colors on your hook.

Directions:

Foundation Row: Chain 3 and sl st into chain one. This will create a circle.

Row 1: Chain 1 (does not count as stitch).  9 HDC into the circle. Sl st. (9 stitches)

Row 2: Chain 1. **2 HDC in same stitch**. Repeat from * to * in the next 8 stitches. Sl st. (18 stitches)

Row 3: Chain 1. **1 HDC in the same stitch. 2 HDC in next stitch**. Repeat from ** to ** 5 more times. Sl st (27 stitches)

Finish off and weave in ends.

And that’s all there is to it! If you make this pattern, be sure to comment below and tag @Paintingsbybindi in photos! I would love to see what you create.
